Setting Up A Charity (But It Is Not What You Think)

Shelter. Are You?

I always wanted to set up a charity.

When my father died in 2003, I wanted to set up a charity for him.  I could not explain the motivation.  I just needed something to remember him by, for his name to remain and stand for something great and good. I looked at the website of my university and found out that for USD$1,000 per semester, I can do that.  But it did not happen – it was probably because I did not have the support or the money I needed or I eventually talked myself out of it.  But I had the strong desire to really do something like that and I often talked about it to my husband.

It is ironic because this year, we were the charity.

Let me explain.

A few months ago, hubby needed to have a pacemaker implantation.  It came at a time when I was pregnant and we had little or no income coming from our logo design business and had salaries and bills to pay and an office to maintain.   We wanted to postpone the operation but the doctors said we could not.

We did not leave anything to chance and scheduled the operation, worry still heavy on our minds.  Eyes closed (and with a prayer), we checked into the hospital.

On the night of the operation, help came.

It is true that nothing is as potent as real life.

To be truly humble, one must be humbled.

To affect a life, one must be affected.

Hope shining in the eyes of people could spark an equivalent (or more) hope.

To be a miracle, one must experience a miracle.

Because one could not give what he does not have.

We experienced all that – humility, help, hope, miracle.

I now realize that it is not in the details or in the setting up of a charity or charities.  It is in the standing up and extending a hand without preconditions or affectations or even a thought.  Helping should be instant, instinctive.  And good intentions, the desire to do good, should be acted upon and should not be allowed to pass.

If he can, one should attempt to change the direction of the winds, of fate, for someone.

Again, our heartfelt thanks to those who made us realize some great truths – that this is a wonderful world and everyone can be equally and astonishingly wonderful too.

Even us.

Even you.
