Two storms flew in and work was suspended. The stars seemed to be aligned.
I could edit a video!
Okay. Maybe it seems silly, but editing and featuring a video on this website is something I obsessed about since I started. I even bought a video camera, and confidently told my internet mentor that my site would have video blogs. But that was about two years ago so I already relegated it to the category of the maybe never.
But on this day, I was ready to fire and aim. I picked a raw video (which I shot recently for a disaster preparedness project I am doing for my husband) and I tinkered with iMovie (and played with the baby), read a how-to manual (and baked with the daughter) —- and 3 hours after, voila!, I had 1:43 minute worth of video (that is one minute and 43 seconds, my friends).
(notice the inserts – I loved that I could do this and be with the kids at the same time – takes the edge off the guilt)
For those who have never shot or edited videos, here are some tips (from a newbie to a newbie):
1. Invest in a microphone. I wanted to buy a lavalier (lapel) microphone, which is so expensive (and I was already considering it) but I found out that a regular microphone with a converter will do. And it cost way, way less.
2. Prepare your interview questions. Do some research. Sometimes you can get gold nuggets if you (pleasantly) surprise the interviewee with how much you know about him or her or the world.
3. Invest in a tripod. Nothing is so irritating and headache-inducing than a shaky video.
4. Watch your raw videos before editing, mark high points. It will be easier to edit/lay out.
5. For Mac users:
a. Long shots are okay. The iMovie has a crop feature so you can do your close ups during the edit. (see, I did not know this)
b. When you crop, the whole video clip will be cropped (i.e., all shots will be close up shots). Trick is to cut the video clips so you can vary your shots.
c. For graphics or texts (i.e., texts like “brought to you by”), you can design an image (via Adobe Photoshop), which you can import to your iPhoto, which your iMovie can grab.
Those were some stuff I figured out that were not in the manuals or tutorials. You will probably figure out (or have figured out) some more along the way (please do tell me).
But see, nothing is impossible. People can learn new things. Add a different dimension to themselves. Find new experiences that they enjoy doing, experiences that may have a potential to change their lives. (don’t know where this is coming from)
And so I write finis to that item on ze bucket list. But wait, wait, wait… I actually liked it!
(will look for pockets of time to make some more) 😀
And now, presenting….
