Celebrating the Chinese New Year

Abundance

The Chinese New Year has been flitting in and out of the edge of my culture and consciousness as kaleidoscopic images of round red lanterns, tikoy, dragon dances and loud firecrackers.

I remember tikoy (Chinese New Year’s cake made of glutinous rice) and my dad dipping it in just-beaten egg yolks and egg whites, frying it on the pan until it gets golden brown all throughout.  We would gather round the table and get it from the plate while it is still hot, our hands getting sticky and oily and sticky again, while our tongues seek and taste the gooey center where the goodness is until there is no more.

I remember dragon dances and its purging-cleansing-luck-bringing ritual and remember inviting a group for the noontime show Teysi ng Tahanan, when I was its guest coordinator.  It did not mean anything to me, then, but the undulations and the fierceness and the majesty of the dragon left an indelible imprint.  I knew the symbolism was important but did not quite understand why.

I remember firecrackers at posh Shangri-la, just last year, when amidst the roses shaped as the hearts of Valentine’s Day, the hotel was woken and its stagnant chi driven out and away by the roar of the fire flowers and rockets and sparklers, all magnificent.

Tonight, we will be celebrating it at our house for the first time.

At 12 midnight, with 13 round fruits and tikoy on our table and coins in crystal bowls, in new nightwear and underwear and slippers.

Ushering in the Year of the Metal Rabbit.

According to Lillian Too’s Mandala Ezine, “The Four Pillars Chart in the coming year of the Golden Metallic Rabbit looks rather foreboding. In fact, the chart is indicating four pillars of directly clashing elements. This is a very nasty indication and it is a clear warning for everyone to be very careful…and travel and risk taking should be kept to a minimum. This is not the year to tempt fate!  However there is also plenty of wealth luck in 2011 but you must be willing to change and take new direction when necessary…new technology and its application are important. You’ll need to be quick and move into uncharted territory for best results… be willing to develop new markets and try different strategies just as water flows quickly and penetrates different nooks and crannies… The good news is that most of the animal signs can do well economically… there is money to be made especially for those of you whose signs occupy one of the secondary compass directions. There is hidden Earth in the chart bringing unexpected resources to fuel growth for the year… and there is also hidden Wood which indicates unexpected wealth, and hidden Fire enhancing managerial capability and authority.  The secret to success however lies with you… you’re going to need to think differently and look for new ways to do things and move quickly when opportunities present themselves… giving credence to the old saying “He who hesitates is lost”.”

To good fortune, good health and happiness – and a deeper understanding of the world and the energy around us – so that we can utilize it for the greater good.
